Herbert Simon, Co-Founder
Herbert Simon is Chairman Emeritus and co- founder of Indianapolis-based Simon Property Group, Inc., a member of the S&P 500 and the largest U.S. publicly traded real estate company. SPG is engaged primarily in regional malls, Premium Outlet Centers and community/lifestyle centers and currently owns, or has interest in, approximately 380 properties in the North America, Europe and Asia.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y. and educated at City College of New York he earned a B.B.A. degree in business. Mr. Simon, along with brothers Melvin and Fred, founded Melvin Simon & Associates as a private company in 1960, becoming one of this industry’s earliest pioneers. In l993, the company made history when Simon Property Group was formed from an Initial Public Offering (NYSE:SPG), becoming the largest REIT IPO in U.S. history at that time.
Mr. Simon’s diversified business interests beyond real estate include ownership of the NBA franchise Indiana Pacers. He is also part owner of the AAA Baseball Reno Aces. A firm supporter of professional, environmental and community groups, Mr. Simon has served on the board of directors of numerous community and civic organizations. He has held leadership roles within several industry associations.
